Meet your Home & Garden steward team

Stewards come from all around the globe, from all sorts of backgrounds. Our team is no different - with members from Michigan, Virginia, Texas, New York, Nevada, and even the UK and Trinidad. We are fathers, mothers, husbands and wives, working stiffs and freelancers, young and older. We all share a love of the written word, as well as a love of all things related to our homes and gardens.

Read all about us right here. Interested in joining us? Check out our Help Wanted section, below, right.

Please welcome our newest steward, Brooke Shambley, in the Furniture subchannel.

Column: Our thoughts on home or garden topics

on Dec 01, 09 at 05:12 PM

Diane Quinn, our super-green Cleaning Stew, has created a beautiful and very useful zone on exactly that topic, green cleaning. Here is the introduction to her Green Clean Your Home Zone:

See that photo of beautiful, unpolluted Ireland on the left?  Going Green is as normal to the Irish as chasing rainbows.  It's not news to them that there are few home topics more important than finding green, more natural solutions to everyday cleaning problems.

With trendy green hooplah spreading across America, people want to know effective, natural alternatives to the manufactured products they've become accustomed to using.   They want green choices that REALLY work!

I've gathered a number of factual and engaging green cleaning articles from the Cleaning sub channel.  If you see any titles that

Channel Steward

Jim Bessey

Jim's profile pic...As a senior steward, and as the Channel Steward for the Home & Garden Channel, I'm trying to help make a difference here at Helium. I'm always happy to answer questions, help with titles, and offer critiques and encouragement.

This task is far too large to handle alone, so I rely on a dedicated team of stewards within our channel...  Read More

Brooke Shambley

I am a writer. Well, aren't we all? I went to college intending to be an English major and came out with a degree in Art, a minor in Music, and another minor in Leadership. I admit, I was extremely daunted by the proposition of two senior theses. However, most importantly I found that as I wrote in the collegiate setting, my professors in English sought to transform my writing into a form more scholarly and more "fitting", instead of just leading me to discover ..... natalia jonesI am a freelance writer from Trinidad. ... Those who know me would tell you that I am always ready to give my opinions, so this vocation was probably inevitable.

I am also a steward assigned to the Home and Garden Channel. My love of all things beautiful drove me to take a short course in Interior Design, which I absolutely enjoyed. My special interest in the Home and Garden Channel though is to stimulate awareness of the impact of our lifestyle choices on the environment... Read More

Francis Jock

Francis Jock...I am your Home Repair Sub-Channel Steward. Together, we can build the best community of Home Repair article writers on the Net...

I love to write for the joy of writing. For the fulfillment and satisfaction of placing thought on paper (or screen) for others to contemplate, enjoy, argue, love or hate. I write from my experience and beliefs, my concept of what it means to be human, not just another American writer.

I write for myself, nothing more, because I am only one voice, a distant voice at that, trying not to be drowned out in the cacophony of literature...  Read More

Guide to writing articles for Helium's Home & Garden Channel

by Jim Bessey

Writing for Helium's Home & Garden channel adheres to the same principles you will follow for many of our other channels, with one important difference: you may find yourself offering "how-to" advice to our readers.

When you do offer advice for working with power tools and construction equipment, please include some safety tips for potential novices - just in case!

Otherwise, writing articles for any of our sub-channels calls for the same professional approach you would use anywhere on Helium to produce a high-quality Internet magazine article...  Read More

For decades now, the Aurora Community Garden has been a place for members from the village and surrounding areas to use their green thumbs and grow all manner of fruits, vegetables and even flowers. However, a smaller membership and other challenges in recent years have meant that the land hasn’t met its full potential. Last weekend, a group of volunteers organized by Boy Scout Geoffrey P. What is a steward?

join handsStewards are writers' and readers' guides around Helium.  Their "contact this writer" buttons always work, and if they don't know, they will find an answer to your questions.

They have amassed articles in their chosen subject, and many others, and are willing to share that knowledge with any who would seek it.

Imbibed in the spirit of giving, stewards help readers find material, writers find their voice and everyone find Helium.

Conduits in the information chain, stewards bring Helium news to the public eye.  They twitter and stumble upon most everything, even if they digg it, too.

Real world knowledge comes from their hands on experiences.  Stewards open windows.

Quality is the steward mantra.  In their own writing, in the writing of their mentees, on the Helium site, they strive to bring the best information to the fore through writing, rating and education.

Many stewards inhabit the forums.  They are the writer's pipeline into Helium.  By suggesting titles, opening debates and listening to the writers, stewards find ways to bring knowledge to everyone.

Stewards learn.  They keep their minds open to opposing opinion, marketing strategy, hot topics, demands for content and new ways to educate themselves, all while finding new ways to help Heliumites the world over.

If you need a hand, a steward will be there.

If you would like to lend a hand, become a steward. Read Barbara Whitlock's article on the Steward Program.  Contact me for more details.

Meet all the Helium Stewards.

We are all here for you.
